Azam verdict being delivered

The first war crimes tribunal of Bangladesh has started delivering its verdict on Jamaat’s former chief Ghulam Azam for crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.

The verdict was being delivered in Azam’s presence, who is up on the dock.

ICT-1 Chairman Justice ATM Fazle Kabir first read out the background to the verdict at 11:08am.

After that, Justice Anwarul Haque started reading out the 75-page executive summary of the 243-page judgement.

The other ICT-1 Justice Jahangir Hossain is also present in the tribunal.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Imanul Islam told bdnews24.com Correspondent Kamal Hossain Talukder that the Jamaat guru had started from the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital at 10am Monday.
bdnews24.com Correspondent Suliman Niloy confirmed Azam’s entry at the tribunal at 10:05am in an ambulance.
The tribunal is scheduled to start reading out the verdict from 10:30am. Traffic on the streets around the tribunal is being diverted as a security precaution.
Security has also been beefed up at the ICT premises since Sunday.
The first war crimes tribunal of Bangladesh had charged Ghulam Azam, who led the Jamaat-e-Islami during the 1971 Liberation War, with crimes against humanity during the war.
The ICT-1 indicted Azam on five war crimes charges – 61 counts –including incitement, conspiracy, planning, abetment and failure to prevent crimes against humanity during the War of Independence.
