The trouble broke out when agitating students tried to put up a road blockade at the Shahbagh intersection. They had blocked the road on Wednesday disrupting traffic in the area for several hours.

A group of agitators gathered at the intersection around 11am to resume the blockade, but the law enforcers charged batons and lobbed teargas shells to disperse them.

The agitated students then took position in front of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Dhaka University and started hurling brickbats at police. They also lit fire on the streets.

On Wednesday, the Public Service Commission (PSC) had decided to review the results of the 34th BCS preliminary test after around 1,000 students, who had failed to clear the test, had hit the streets opposing the quota system and blockaded Shahbagh for the whole day.
The agitators have been demanding cancellation of the result and amendment of the quota system.
The demonstrators decided to continue their movement, despite the PSC’s announcement, until quota system is scrapped.
