The authorities at That’s It Sports Ltd claimed 19-year old sewing operator Parul Akhter hanged herself in the factory’s bathroom on Saturday night.
The workers, enraged by her unnatural death, staged protests on Sunday morning and the factory was announced closed for the day.
Parul Akhter is the daughter of late Manju Mia from Kapashia’s Shaldai village of Gazipur Upazila.
She worked as a sewing operator on the fourth floor of the factory.
Ashulia Station Sub-Inspector Sohrab Hossain told bdnews24.com, “The factory authorities had taken her to the Women and Child Health Centre in Beron. Police brought her body to the police station at around 8:00pm after they were informed.”
“Parul had her scarf wrapped around her neck. She also had black marks on her neck. Factory authorities are saying she hanged herself with her scarf in the factory.”
Deputy Managing Director of the factory Delwar Hossain told bdnews24.com Parul reportedly handed over Tk 1500 and an umbrella to her co-worker ‘Sheema’ and asked her to take those to her mother. She went to the bathroom after that.
Her colleagues found her hanging in the bathroom after waiting long for her to come out, said Delwar Hossain.
“She was brought down and taken to the hospital. The doctors there declared her dead. Police were informed and they came to take the dead body. We filed a case with the police at night over unnatural death.”
Parul’s body has been sent to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital for an autopsy, Ashulia Police Station Sub-Inspector Sohrab Hossain said.
On the protest by workers on Sunday morning Ha-Meem official Delwar Hossain said, “We tried to calm them down after they had begun protesting in the morning. But they left the factory, so we announced the factory closed for the day.”
The factory is owned by former president of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) AK Azad.
