Eight Shibir activists have been nabbed with firearms, bombs and sharp weapons in overnight raids conducted in three areas of the port city.

The eight were nabbed in raids between 8:30pm to 4:30am on Wednesday-Thursday, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner (Panchlaish) Abdur Rauf told bdnews24.com.

“One Shibir man Abu Sayeed, a Chittagong University student, was caught red handed in the city’s Muradpur area while lobbing a home-made bomb at night. Sayeed is a student of Islamic Studies.

Based on information he provided, five Shibir activists were picked up in late night raids on a messing facility in the city’s Mohammadpur area. Police then raided a house in city’s Jangishah Mazar area, based on information secured from these five.

But as police approached the house, Shibir lobbed bombs, provoking the law-keepers to open fire.

Two Shibir activists were shot at that time, said Assistant Commissioner Rauf.

Two light guns (LG), three bombs and four machetes were recovered from the house.

The two Shibir activists who sustained bullet injuries are being treated at the Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
