ASP Sohel Ahmed has been admitted to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital.

Jamaat and Shibir activists took out a procession in the city’s Hetem Khan at around 3:30pm and when police tried to stop them, they came under attack, Detective Branch OC Alamgir Hossain said.

He said the Shibir activists opened fire from the Barendra Museum, hitting ASP Sohel Ahmed.

Within minutes of the skirmish, angry locals set a coaching centre run by Islami Chatra Shibir on fire around 4pm in the city’s Ghoshparha.

Police were trying to control the fire.

Jamaat supporters have been systematically targetting police since they stepped up their violent campaign against the ongoing war crimes trials. They have also used firearms in their clashes with the police.

Security analysts say the police and the paramilitary forces are bogged down with routine law and order duties due to the high pitch violence but once that is controlled, they will need to raid Jamaat and Shibir offices to track down the illegal weapons in their possession.
