Pranab received the honour at the 47th Convocation of the university.

Bangladesh President and DU Chancellor Mohammad Zillur Rahman handed over the honorary degree to Mukherjee at 11:45am at the convocation ceremony organised in the university central playground.

The Indian President arrived in Dhaka Sunday on a three-day visit. He will also receive the Bangladesh Liberation War Honour Award.

Mukherji began his career as a college teacher and has authored several books. He is believed to be one of the best read Indian politicians.

Reading out the citation of the degree, Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique said the university was conferring on him with the Honourary Doctor of Laws degree ‘in view of his outstanding achievements’.

“He is an extra ordinary orator and scholar who has significant knowledge on parliamentary proceedings, economic affairs and international relations, and has deep political conscience,” the citation read.

The citation also recalled his contribution to the 1971 war of independence.
