Shopkeeper beaten to death in Gaibandha

A shop-owner was beaten to death in renewed atrocities by Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists on Friday morning in Sunderganj of Gaibandha , forcing authorities to slap prohibitory orders in the area.

Shariful Islam Ranju, 35, was beaten to death in Gangsarhaat Bazar of Shantimariam Union at around 7:30am, said Gaibandha Superintendent of Police AKM Nahidul Islam. “They were vandalising his shop and he tried to stop them.”
Two other shopkeepers, Saju, 30, and Ful, 55, were taken to the local upazila health complex with injuries sustained during the incident.
Section 144 was imposed in Sunderganj amidst the chaos, Upazila Executive Officer Ahsan Habib told bdnews24.com.
Meanwhile, police constable Tomazzel, who was injured in Thursday's clashes, succumbed to his injuries in the Rangpur Medical College and Hospital early on Friday morning.
Violence broke out on Thursday afternoon, soon after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 pronounced death sentence for Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
Jamaat and Shibir activists attacked the Sunderganj Bamandanga Railway Station and the Bamandanga police outpost and clashed with the law enforcers.
Three policemen were killed in the violence. Five others, including ‘Tomazzel’, were admitted to hospital.

Two cases
Sub-Inspectors Abu Hanif and Mizanur Rahman of Sundarganj Police Station filed two cases with the station over Thursday's violence.
Manzur Ahmed, OC of the police station, said a number of 20,000 unnamed and 100 named people including former Gaibandha-1 MP Abdul Aziz have been accused in the cases.
