Jamaat attacks Sylhet police

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir launched attacks on police in Sylhet and vandalism in Sylhet City after Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee was handed down death sentence for war crimes on Thursday.

Jamaat supporters vandalised a police vehicle in Kanaighaat’s Gaachhbarhi at around 3pm, said Sylhet Police Superintendent Sakhawat Hossain.

Security forces also came under attack as Sayedee supporters pelted them with brickbats in the city’s Shibganj, leaving three policemen injured.

The miscreants launched surprise attacks in several areas following Sayedee’s verdict, Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Commissioner Ejaj Ahmed said.

An office of the pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League in the city’s Madina Market was vandalised at around 2:30pm. They also smashed ATMs of South East Bank and Dutch Bangla Bank in that area.

A school owned by an MP of the ruling party at Pathantula also came under attack. They vandalised branches of Bank Asia and Pubali Bank in Biyani Bazaar municipal area.

Peace has been restored in the area, said SP Hossain.

Additional police , BGB and RAB have been deployed in the city to prevent further chaos..

Jamaat operatives have let loose mayhem across the country after the International Crimes Tribunal-1 judged that Sayedee was to hang for genocide, murder, rape, arson, loot and persecution in 1971.
