Captain Jannatul Ferdous has become Bangladesh’s first female paratrooper.

She made a 1000-metre jump and landed safely on Thursday in the Panichharha Drop Zone adjacent to the Sylhet Cantonment.

Captain Ferdous got commission in the 59th BMA Long Course in Bangladesh Army on Dec 24, 2009. She is currently working as a computer trainer in Bangladesh Military Academy.

She took part in a ‘Basic Para Course’ conducted by the Special War Section of the Jalalabad School of Infantry and Tactics on Jan 13 this year.

Chief trainer of the school’s Special War Section, Lt Col AKM Saiful Islam, said the course was introduced from 1990s. He said female members of the Army were not attracted to the course as “it is very risky”.

“Captain Jannatul Ferdous is the first woman to willingly participate and successfully complete the course,” Islam said.
