Dhaka, Aug 26 (bdnews24.com)—A Dhaka court has granted the police five days to interrogate four suspects detained in connection with the murder of Bangladesh Medical Association leader Dr Narayan Chandra Datta Nitai.
The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Shahriar Mahmud Adnan gave the order on Sunday based on a 10-day remand plea by Inspector of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Detective Branch, Gazi Ataur Rahman.
Dr Nitai, an Executive Committee member of BMA, was knifed to death in the early hours of Thursday at his home in Mahakhali's National Institute of Disease of the Chest and Hospital (NIDCH) residential area.
Police on Saturday produced four suspected robbers before the media just two days after the murder and said they had recovered looted gold ornaments and the knife used for killing the 48-year-old doctor.
Those detained are Masud alias Peda, 28, 'Saidul', 38, Pichchi Kamal, 35 and 'Faisal', 32.
Rapid Action Battalion have detained one 'Kamal' on Saturday in connection with the murder.
The law enforcers had been insisting that the murder took place during a burglary despite Nitai's family's belief that it was a premeditated murder over recruitment in a hospital.
The father of the deceased, Tarit Kanti Datta, had filed a case over the incident with the Banani police mentioning Tk 500,000 went missing after the incident.
Nitai's brother-in-law Surash Chowdhury, however, claimed after the murder that it was premeditated.
He alleged Nitai was being threatened over recruitment of third and fourth class employees at the NIDCH but failed to name anyone.
