Dhaka, Apr 8 (bdnews24.com) – Bloggers demonstrated on Sunday demanding arrest of killers of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi.
They said leaders of journalist unions should not postpone protest plans on assurance of home minister Shahara Khatun to arrest the murderers.
After a tea-meeting with Shahara on Saturday, the union leaders deferred Sunday's sit-in programme in front of the home ministry and before the offices of deputy commissioners and police superintendents outside Dhaka to May 6.
Journalists from print and electronic media also took part in a human chain programme the bloggers held on Dhaka University campus.
Runi's brother and plaintiff of the murder case Nawsher Alam Roman also attended the programme.
"The role of journalist leaders is suspect," he said.
"What did she (Shahara) say during the tea that returned the union leaders with smiles on their faces?" he asked.
Roman demanded they make public what Shahara had told them.
Blogger Manzur Morshed, a doctor by profession, said the move to defer the agitation is unacceptable.
Irin Sultana wanted to know the journalists' course of action if the demand is not met within May 5.
"The union leaders may become silent once again after eating something else one month later. But the bloggers will demonstrate peacefully until the killers are arrested.
"No tea can silence us," she added.
Bodies of the journalist couple had been recovered from their apartment in the city's West Rajabazar area on Feb 11.
Police are yet to name any suspect or arrest any of the killers.
