BCL RU leaders file cases against each other

Rajshahi University, Aug 8 (bdnews24.com) – A case and a counter case have been filed with Matihar police station in Rajshahi following the clash that erupted on Saturday between two rival factions of the ruling Awami League's student wing, the Chhatra League at Rajshahi University.
In the cases each faction accuses the other of using explosives, and undertaking attacks.
Witnesses said clashes erupted on Saturday at around 2:30 pm between followers of the president of Bangladesh Chatra League university unit, Awal Kabir Joy and general secretary, Majedul Islam Apu. They also reported that several gunshots were fired.
At least 10 pro-government student activists were injured in the clashes. Following the incident, Apu was arrested and he was sent to jail on Sunday.
On Sunday morning, Mehedi Hassan, a second year student of Sanskrit and a follower of the BCL president, filed a case with allegations against 10 students of the university, including the organisation's general secretary.
At around the same time, a physics department student and a supporter of the general secretary Azizul Haque filed another case accusing 22 people including the president.
In the Mehedi Hassan's case the other accused are-'Ratan' of Arabic, 'Golap' and 'Takim' of Sohrawardi hall, 'Tuhin' of finance, 'Lion' of Actroy intersection area, 'Ashish' and 'Moksed' of physics and 'Mehedi' of social Works.
In the case filed by Azizul Haque, along with 20 to 25 unidentified people, 'Nayan' of management, 'Sohel' of MBA, Rony-1 and Rony-2 of islamic history, ' Arif' and Golam Mustafa of marketing, Rockey, 'Nazmul' and 'Joy' of geography, Billal Hossain Bil and 'Sowrav' of anthropology, 'Mintu' of history, Oaj Kurni of islamic studies, Humayun Kabir and ' Palash' of public administration, 'Faruq' and 'Sharif' of accounting, Delwar Hossain Dils of folklore, 'Nayan' of economics and other two university student 'Rony' and 'Mehedi' have been accused.
Matihar police station sub inspector Arif Hossain provided confirmation about the cases and said that 'Apu' had been detained in Mehedi Hassan's case.
He added that 'Sharif' of Accounting and ' Mehedi' of Sanskrit have been shown arrested in Mehedi Hassan's case. They are still under treatment at hospital.
"Both of them are the supporters of the president. Attempts to arrest the remaining accused are ongoing," he added.
Meanwhile, Apu was produced before the metropolitan magistrate-1 court at noon.
Judge Amirul Islam ruled that he should be questioned, said the court's inspector Debendranath Sarkar.
Police raided the university's Sher-e-Bangla Fazlul Haque Hall and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Hall after the clash. However no weapons were seized and no one was arrested.
On Sunday, classes were held normally but student presence was low. BCL activists were absent. Additional police personnel have been deployed at the campus.
