Dhaka, March 30 (bdnews24.com) - Six militants of banned militant outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh have been hanged, a prisons official and relatives said Friday.
"Yes, the execution is done, but I can't give you more details," the prisons official told bdnews24.com on condition of anonymity.
President Iajuddin Ahmed on March 4 rejected the mercy appeals of the six of the seven militants, who were sentenced to death for their roles in the November 2005 killings of two judges in Jhalakathi.
The outfit's top leader Shaikh Abdur Rahman was hanged early Friday in Comilla jail while his deputy Siddiqul Islam, popularly known as Bangla Bhai, was executed in Mymensingh prison. Abdul Awal was also hanged in Mymensingh prison.
Abdur Rahman was executed in the presence of representatives for deputy commissioner and superintendent of police and civil surgeon and magistrate. The body of Rahman was taken to Jamalpur by truck.
Ataur Rahman Sunny and Iftekhar Al Mamun were hanged in Kashimpur jail in Gazipur while Khaled Saifullah in Pabna jail.
The bdnews24.com Bogra correspondent said the body of Bangla Bhai reached his home village in the morning. Rafiqul Islam, brother of Bangla Bhai, confirmed to bdnews24.com that he had received the body.
The bdnews24.com Jamalpur correspondent said Abdur Rahman's sister Atiqa Begum confirmed that she had received his body.
A trial court had earlier sentenced seven militants of the group to death in the case, a verdict the Supreme Court later upheld.
Asadul Islam Arif is at large.
On March 22, DIG prisons Major Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told bdnews24.com that the militants would be executed sometime between April 13-19.
Jail authorities were asked to execute death sentences in 21 to 28 days from the day the militants had received the final verdict reports.
The group denounces the country's legal system based on British common law and wants to impose tough Islamic rules.
It launched its violent campaign through a nationwide bombing on August 17, 2005.
Security officials claim they have broken down the group's chain of command but say many of the group's members are still active across the country.
