Satkhira, Sept 20 (bdnews24.com) – Heavy onrush of water inundated five villages in Satkhira, adjacent to the Sundarbans area when the Pankhali sluice gate totally collapsed Tuesday. More than 200 shrimp enclosures were also washed away.
Local people said that the WAPDA embankment of Shyamnagar upazila breached under pressure of the Chuna river. Water also demolished the 60-foot embankment of the Water Development Board. As a result, water entered West Aturia, Gumantali, Kathalbaria, Abad Chondipur and Pankhali villages under Aturia and Burigoyalini unions of Shyampur upazila.
Several mud houses were also damaged due to the onrush of water.
Local people said that their effort to build a ring embankment failed due to the rush of water.
bdnews24.com tried to contact the officials of the Water Development Board, but none of them was available for comment.
