The Donald Trump administration has released a map showing the entire region of Kashmir as part of India, marking a major shift from previous US maps that excluded Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The graphic, shared by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on X, while announcing an interim trade agreement with New Delhi, depicts not only Indian-controlled Kashmir but also areas currently administered by Pakistan.
According to the Times of India, the map also includes China-controlled Aksai Chin, though most Indian media have focused on the inclusion of Pakistan-administered Azad Kashmir.
Analysts say the move effectively recognises India’s claim over the entire region, a first for the US, as previous official maps left out the parts under Pakistan’s control.
The map was posted alongside details about reduced tariffs on several American products entering India, ranging from cashew nuts to a variety of other goods opening new markets in the country.
No immediate comment was available from Pakistan.
In recent months, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army chief Asim Munir had maintained close ties with Trump, and experts say the map could be a diplomatic setback for Islamabad.
The US has also been pursuing increased trade with Pakistan, agreeing to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in Balochistan, according to reports from Indian and Pakistani media.
Washington has shown interest in Pakistan’s rare minerals and continues to supply military equipment to the country.
On Saturday, Indian and American officials issued a joint statement announcing the interim trade agreement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the deal, thanking President Trump for the development.
