Paraguay, Feb 18 (BDNEWS)-Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte Frutos has promised to fight what he called a growing culture of death in the Latin American state, according to wire services.
He was reacting to the murder of Cecilia Cubas, the daughter of a former Paraguayan president who was kidnapped last September. Her body was discovered on Wednesday night.
Police are questioning a left-wing politician over the killing. Some in the government have suggested Colombia's largest militant group, the Farc, may have been involved.
Responding to the murder on Thursday, Paraguay's current president said he would not let hate and evil take hold of the country.
He promised to stop what he called a growing "culture of death" and, without naming names, he said the perpetrators were "operating under the cloak of politics".
That was probably a sideways reference to Osmar Martinez, a leader of the left-wing Patria Libre party, who is being questioned in connection with the crime.
Paraguay's Attorney-General, Diego Latorre, has alleged that Mr Martinez maintained e-mail contact about the kidnapping with a senior member of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or Farc.
As yet, no firm evidence has been made public to confirm that link, nor any explanation given as to why the Farc would involve itself with Paraguay.
Likewise, the remarks made by President Duarte Frutos, though strong, have done little to shed light on this crime.
