A well-marked low-pressure area over the northern Bay of Bengal has developed into a monsoon depression, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).
In a special weather bulletin on Sunday, it says the weather system was about 510km west-southwest of Chattogram, 520km west of Cox's Bazar, 285km west-southwest of Mongla and 340km west-southwest of Payra at noon.
It is likely to move west-northwest and hit the coast in India’s north Odisha in the next 24 hours. However, the Bangladesh’s maritime ports, the north Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas may see squally weather under the system’s influence.
Maximum sustained wind speed within 44km of the depression centre is about 40kmph, rising to 50 kmph in gusts and squalls. However, the sea will remain moderate near the depression centre.
The BMD has advised the maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to continue displaying Local Cautionary Signal No. 3.
The BMD urged all fishing vessels and trawlers to seek immediate shelter and remain there until further notice.
Earlier in the day, Meteorologist Md Bazlur Rashid told bdnews24.com: "There is a possibility that this well-marked low will develop into a depression. As a result, rainfall will increase. Rain has already begun intensifying in the southern region today and is expected to continue until the 12th or 13th. However, the danger signal is not being raised at this stage. Signal No. 3 remains in effect."
A low-pressure area had formed over the Bay of Bengal on Thursday. After gaining strength, it intensified into a well-marked low on Saturday.
The Met Office also said that the axis of the monsoon trough extends through Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, the centre of the well-marked low, southern Bangladesh, and Assam.
The southwest monsoon is active over Bangladesh and remains strong over the northern Bay of Bengal.
As a result, during the 24 hours from 9am on Sunday, most places in the Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions, and many places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, and Dhaka divisions are likely to experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thundershowers.
In addition, some areas in the Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions may experience moderately heavy to very heavy rainfall.
Meanwhile, a mild heat wave continues over Rangpur Division and the districts of Rajshahi, Pabna, Naogaon, Dhaka, Kishoreganj, Tangail, Mymensingh, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Rangamati, Chandpur, Feni, Cox's Bazar, and Chuadanga, although it is expected to subside.
Daytime temperatures across the country may decrease by 1°C to 3°C, while nighttime temperatures may fall slightly.
Along with the seaports, the BMD has also issued Cautionary Signal No. 1 for several inland river ports.
In a special warning issued for inland river ports, in place from 9:00am to 6:00pm on Sunday, the department said that the regions of Rajshahi, Pabna, Dhaka, Faridpur, Kushtia, Jashore, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Cumilla, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, and Sylhet may experience temporary squally winds from the south or southeast at speeds of 45–60 kmph, accompanied by rain or thunderstorms.
Accordingly, inland river ports in these areas have been instructed to display Cautionary Signal No. 1.
