A Malaysian court has charged a military officer with the murder of a 22-year-old Bangladeshi content creator in a car accident in Kuala Lumpur, reports the Straits Times.
Judge Illi Marisqa Khalizan of the Magistrate’s Court passed the order on Thursday in the presence of the suspect Jad Faid Arhan, a 31-year-old captain.
Arhan, however, did not react when the charge was read out to him.
According to the report, no plea was recorded despite murder charges falling under the jurisdiction of the High Court.
The deceased, Muzahid Millad, had travelled with his wife, Nafisa Tabassum Adiba, 20, from Habiganj for a week-long vacation, marking their second visit to Malaysia on Apr 23.
Allegedly under the influence of alcohol, Arhan crashed into the taxi carrying the couple minutes after their arrival at Kuala Lumpur International Airport in the morning.
Muzahid died on the spot due to severe head injuries while Nafisa sustained a broken leg and was admitted to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.
The couple had been married for two years and had no children.
The charge sheet says Arhan allegedly killed Millad at 1.9km on the Maju Expressway at about 5.30am under the influence of alcohol.
The charge slapped on the Malaysian soldier falls under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a death sentence, or imprisonment between 30 and 40 years, and a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.
Defence lawyer Muhammad Nazreen Jaafar said they would not seek bail for his client due to the existing charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
Meanwhile, Arhan was brough up on two counts of driving under the influence at a separate magistrate’s court. He pleaded not guilty before the court, which also denied him bail.
The charges under Malaysia’s laws carry penalties of imprisonment between seven and 10 years, and a fine up to $12,594.46, if convicted.
