Battery-powered autorickshaw garages occupy the footpaths in Dhaka's Tejgaon Industrial Area, where the batteries are being charged through illegal connections to electricity poles. Makeshift power lines are scattered around the rickshaws, posing a risk for major accidents.

A vast swathe on the northern side of the Postogola Bridge in Dhaka has become a dumping ground for vehicles seized by traffic police. Battery-powered rickshaws make up the overwhelming majority. Seized for various traffic violations, including operating illegally on major roads, many of these vehicles remain there for months, gradually deteriorating.

Battery-powered rickshaws are frequently seized from Dhaka’s streets. Despite the ban, many still operate illegally. Once confiscated, they are taken to the Postogola “dumping station”. Although the yard also holds buses, trucks, and autorickshaws, the overwhelming majority are battery rickshaws. Owners and drivers retrieve them after paying fines to the traffic police.

Colourful battery-operated rickshaws run freely on the labyrinthine alleys of Dhaka, as well as on the main roads. This vehicle, faster than traditional pedal rickshaws, do not have a specific structure, and are often slapped together with whatever parts are available. This makes each one different. Due to the lack of a standard, accidents can occur due to their speed, poor control, inefficient drivers, and driving on the wrong side of the road.

Battery-powered rickshaws continue to operate unchecked on major roads and highways across Dhaka. Despite being illegal, they move at reckless speeds, frequently leading to both minor and fatal accidents.

Police’s experimental trapper in Dhaka, aimed at stopping paddle and battery-powered rickshaws from entering main roads, is not providing desired results.

Battery-run rickshaws can be seen going the wrong way on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway. The three-wheelers are banned from the busy road, but they seem to be operating on it with impunity. Their tendency to use the high-speed lanes instead of the service lanes is also leading to accidents.
