Haggling at ‘day labour market’ in Hemayetpur
Before dawn breaks, the Hemayetpur Bus Stand area in Savar comes alive with the sounds of a crowd. Men and women arrive carrying spades and hoes, gathering in groups and clusters, sit or stand as they wait for employers to come by. Haggling goes on at regular intervals. Once a desired wage is agreed upon, they leave in groups for the employer’s home or worksite. This is how the daily trade unfolds at the “labour market” at the bus stand.
