Bangladesh sealed a landmark moment in their ODI history, completing their first-ever series victory over Australia with a 5-wicket win in the second ODI in Dhaka.
The foundation of the triumph was laid by Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman, who dismantled Australia’s top order in a remarkable opening spell before Bangladesh chased down a rain-adjusted target of 192 with composure at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Australia were left reeling almost immediately, collapsing to 0 for 3 in one of the most extraordinary starts in ODI cricket.
Taskin removed Matthew Short for a duck for the third consecutive innings, while Mustafizur struck twice in a devastating new-ball burst.
The tourists eventually recovered to 187 for 8 in 42 overs, aided by a 103-run seventh-wicket partnership between Marnus Labuschagne and Xavier Bartlett.
Labuschagne anchored the innings with an unbeaten 55 off 85 balls, while Bartlett counterattacked with a fluent 52 off 48, striking six boundaries.
Their stand briefly stabilised Australia after they had been reduced to 25 for 4, but Bangladesh’s bowlers ensured the total never fully escaped control.
Mustafizur finished with three wickets, while Taskin also claimed as many, his late breakthroughs effectively tilting the DLS equation in Bangladesh’s favour after a long rain interruption.
The chase, however, was anything but straightforward.
Bartlett, fresh from his maiden ODI half-century, made an immediate impact with the ball, beating the bat and briefly lifting Australia’s hopes.
Bangladesh lost early wickets as Tanzid Hasan fell cheaply and Najmul Hossain Shanto survived a close lbw review.
Soumya Sarkar (42) had earlier provided momentum with crisp strokeplay, striking boundaries square of the wicket and clearing the ropes over long-on.
Shanto (42) matched him briefly before Bangladesh’s innings wobbled through a cluster of dismissals, including Litton Das and Mosaddek Hossain, both falling after promising starts.
At 144 for 5, the chase still required composure.
Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz (20*) absorbed a blow to the head yet remained at the crease to steady the innings alongside Towhid Hridoy (40*).
Hridoy then accelerated decisively, finishing the contest with a hook for six followed by a pulled boundary, before Miraz sealed victory with another aggressive hook.
Earlier, Australia’s collapse had been triggered by relentless pressure from Taskin and Mustafizur.
Australia became only the fourth side in ODI history to be reduced to 0 for 3, underlining the scale of Bangladesh’s early dominance.
Mustafizur later removed Alex Carey, while Tanvir Islam chipped in with key wickets including Cameron Green, ensuring Australia never fully rebuilt.
