Dhaka, Jan 18 (bdnews24.com) - Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the only son of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, has been chosen by the World Economic Forum as one of the top 250 young global leaders with the potential to shape the future of the world.
Drawn from a pool of over 4,000 candidates, the Switzerland-based civil society forum's list of Young Global Leaders 2007 includes among others, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, co-founders of Google; and Mikheil Saakashvili, President of Georgia, according to a Web posting on www.younggloballeaders.org.
Thirty young leaders represent South Asia in the prestigious list introduced in 2004.
The World Economic Forum recognises, each year, the top 250 young leaders from around the world for their professional accomplishments and commitment to society.
Sajeeb graduated from St Joseph's College of Science in Bangalore and obtained a degree from the University of Texas in Computer Science and Engineering.
He founded Mvion Inc, a prototype software developing company, and raised $8 million in venture capital. Mvion brought in revenues of approximately $2,00,000 a month and was evaluated at $80-90 million.
Sajeeb currently manages the communications and lobbying efforts of the Awami League in Washington. He founded the Bangabandhu Foundation of US, which provides basic healthcare and immigration assistance to needy expatriate Bangladeshis in the US.
Sajeeb also raises funds for its sister organisation, the Bangabandhu Trust in Bangladesh, and promotes democracy and human rights issues in Bangladesh in partnership with the US administration.
"This unique global network has the potential to tackle global challenges through knowledge sharing and leveraging horizontal networks of collaborative platforms. Together, they form a powerful international force for the global common good," said Klaus Schwab, executive chairman of the World Economic Forum.
The young leaders nominated in 2007 have been chosen by a selection committee of 34 eminent international media leaders including Marjorie Scardino, Chief Executive, Pearson, UK; Arthur Sulzberger, Chairman and Publisher, The New York Times; Tom Glocer, CEO, Reuters; and Hisashi Hieda, Chairman and CEO, Fuji Television Network, Japan.
Queen Rania of Jordan chairs the committee.
