Opposition MPs head JS standing committees

Parliament Wednesday formed 11 more standing committees, with main opposition BNP heading two. This is the first time the opposition MPs have been given the posts of chairmen of the parliamentary watchdogs on the ministries to ensure transparency and accountability of the government.

Dhaka, Feb 18 (bdnews24.com) – Parliament Wednesday formed 11 more standing committees, with main opposition BNP heading two.
This is the first time the opposition MPs have been given the posts of chairmen of the parliamentary watchdogs on the ministries to ensure transparency and accountability of the government.
With Wednesday's committees, 31 of the 48 parliamentary standing committees have been formed in the House.
Senior BNP MP MK Anwar was made chairman of the standing committee on the environment and forest ministry.
Another BNP MP Joynal Abdin was made head of the committee on the fisheries and livestock ministry.
One post of member from the BNP was left vacant. Besides, memberships have been reserved for the women MPs to be elected to the reserved seats.
One whip enjoying the status of state minister has been made chairman of two standing committees.
Chief whip Abdus Shahid proposed the names of the committees and the members, and the proposals were unanimously adopted.
Whip Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury was elected chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the shipping ministry. The other members are Afsarul Amin, Shah Alam, Mazharul Haq Prodhan, Habibun Nahar, Shasul Haq Chowdhury, Nazrul Islam and Goalm Kibria Tipu.
Meher Afroz will head the committee on the women and children affairs ministry. Three women MPs to be elected from the reserved seats will be inducted in the committee. Again, one member from the BNP will be drafted in the committee. The other members are Sheikh Hasina, Sirajul Akbar, M A Mannan, Rebecca Momin and Sultana Tarun.
K H Rashiduzzaman was elected chairman of the 15-member parliamentary standing committee on public accounts committee. Tipu Sultan, TIM Fazle Rabbi Chowdhury, Ali Ashraf, Md Imaz Uddin Pramanik, Chhayedul Haq, A K M Rahmatullah, Khandaker Asaduzaman, Dhirendra Devnath Shambhu, Abdus Salam, Hafiz Ahmed Majumder and Enamul Haq will sit on the committee.
Two posts of members were reserved for the BNP and one for an MP to be elected from women's reserved seats.
Shajahan Khan will helm the standing committee on the labour and employment ministry. The other committee members are Monnuzan Sufian, Nasim Osman, Abdus Sattar, Shahiduzzaman Sarker, Monoranjan Shil Gopal, Israfil Alam and Noni Gopal Mondol.
Mosharraf Hossain will be heading the parliamentary standing committee on the civil aviation and tourism ministry. G M Quader, Mojibul Haq, Mahbubur Rahman, Moinuddin Khan Badol, Syed Mohsin Ali, Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury and Fazlul Haq Khan were elected to the committee as members.
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman will head the parliamentary standing committee on the communications ministry. Omar Faruk Chowdhury, Syed Abul Hosain, Zillul Hakim, H M Golam Reza, Golam Mowla Roni, Abu Zaher and Ekramul Chowdhury were also elected members.
Subid Ali Bhuiyan will steer the parliamentary standing committee on the energy and mineral resources ministry. The other members are Shamsul Haq Tuku, Abdus Shahid, Abdul Matin Khasru, Mojibur Rahman Fakir, Fazle Noor Taposh, Enamul Haq and Abdul Kader Khan.
Chhayedul Haq was elected chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the food and disaster management ministry. The other members are Abdur Razaq, Atiur Rahman Atik, Narayan Chandra Chanda, Iqbalur Rahim, Afzal Hossain and Akram Hossain Chowdhury. One member will be inducted from the BNP.
Akhtaruzzaman Chowdhury will chair the committee on the jute and textile ministry. The other members are Abdul Latif Siddiqui, Choyon Islam, Tipu Munshi, Mollah Jalal Uddin, Hayatur Rahman Khan, Abdul Wadud and Shafiqul Islam.
BNP's Joynal Abdin was elected chairman of the parliamentary standing committee on the fisheries and livestock ministry. The other members are Abdul Latif Biswas, Moslem Uddin, Zillul Hakim, Mokbul Hossain, Ilyas Uddin Mollah, Monzur Kader Quraishi, Mir Shawkat Ali and Zafar Iqbal Siddiqui.
M K Anwar will helm the parliamentary standing committee on the environment and forest ministry. Mostafizur Rahman, Saber Hossain Chowdhury, Ekabbar Hossain, Sohrab Ali Sana, Bir Bahadur, Giasuddin Ahmed, Golam Sabur and MA Jabbar will sit on the committee.
