Dhaka, Sept 25 (BDNEWS) – Aspirants from the components of the ruling coalition and opposition Jatiya Party Sunday submitted their nomination papers to the returning officer in the nine reserved seats for women in the Jatiya Sangsad.
The nine seats, out of 45 reserved seats for women, remained vacant as the main opposition Awami League declined to participate in the election. Earlier, 36 woman MPs were elected from the coalition partners and JP.
BNP had announced its candidates to six seats Saturday night. This time they left two seats for their alliance partner Jamaat-E-Islami and Islami Oikkyo Jote (Amini) while another for opposition Jatiya Party (Ershad).
The BNP nominated candidates are: Begum Rozina Islam, Khodeza Emdad Lata, Rasheda Begum Hira, Saimun Begum, Newaz Halima Arli and Fahima Hossain Jubilee.
Jamaat nominated candidate is Begum Rokeya Ansar, wife of former Jamaat MP from Satkhira Sheikh Ansar Ali, and IOJ candidate Naima Sultana, is the wife of IOJ Dhaka city unit secretary general Sheikh Lokman Hossain.
But a dramatic change occurred in nominating JP (Ershad) candidate. Earlier on Saturday, party sources confirmed Nasrin Jahan Ratna as the JP candidate but finally, Noor-e-Hasna Lily Chowdhury, convenor of Jatiya Mohila Party central committee, got the nomination.
BNP lawmakers Nazimuddin Alam, Zahir Uddin Swapan and the office secretary of the central committee Mofikul Hasan Tripty accompanied the party candidates while social welfare minister Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid and Maolana Abdus Sobhan, MP, came with Jamaat's candidate while submitting the nomination papers.
IOJ candidate submitted her nomination with party lawmakers Mufty Mohammad Wakkas and Shahenur Pasha Chowdhury. Lily Chowdhury, also a former MP in women's reserved seats in the Sangsad of 1986, came with Motiur Rahman, MP, and Hafijuddin, MP.
According to the election schedule announced by Election Commission (EC), the date for withdrawal of the candidature is September 29 and the elections will be held on October 4.
In the first phase of the elections, 36 women MPs were elected unopposed as there was no other contestant. Among them, 30 were from BNP, three from Jamaat, two from Jatiya Party (Ershad) and one from BJP.
