Dhaka, Nov 28 (bdnews24.com) – A special court dealing with high-profile corruption cases Wednesday sentenced former BNP lawmaker Rashiduzzaman Millat to six years in jail for tax-dodge.
Judge Md Ashraf Hossain of Special Judges' Court-5, set up at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, also fined Millat Tk 22 lakh and he faces another three months in prison should he fail to pay the money.
The sentence comes into force from the day of the convict's arrest or surrender.
Millat was handed down five years in jail for concealing asset information and fined Tk 20 lakh or a further one year in prison. He was sentenced to one year in jail, and a Tk 2 lakh fine or another three months on jail on the second charge of falsifying wealth information.
The former MP from Jamalpur-1 constituency will have to spend five years behind bars as the two sentences are to be served simultaneously.
According to case details, Millat concealed wealth information during the tax years 1988-89 to 2005-36 and did not pay Tk 4.51 crore in tax.
National Board of Revenue deputy tax commissioner Mridul Kanti Das filed the case on Oct 7.
Dhaka metropolitan senior special judge Md Azizul Haque ordered his arrest the same day. A total of 18 people gave deposition on behalf of the state.
