The BNP has announced an eight-day series of events to commemorate the 45th death anniversary of its founder, the late president Ziaur Rahman.
Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi detailed the programme, running from May 25 to Jun 1, during a press conference at the chairman’s Gulshan office on Tuesday.
The decision followed a joint meeting with party affiliates.
Rizvi described Zia as “a great epoch-maker, gallant freedom fighter, sector commander, and the man who proclaimed independence”.
“His memory remains alive among party leaders and the people of the country,” the veteran leader said.
He said Eid-ul-Azha falling within the period meant associate organisations could hold discussion meetings a day or two later if needed, but the main programme would run as scheduled.
The centrepiece of the programme is a floral tribute at Zia's grave in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 11am on May 30, led by party Chairman Tarique Rahman alongside senior party leaders.
A prayer session organised by the Jatiotabadi Ulama Dal will follow.
On May 31 at 2pm, a discussion will be held at the auditorium of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh in Ramna.
Early on May 30, party and national flags will fly at half-mast and black flags will be hoisted at the central office in Naya Paltan and at party offices across the country.
BNP and its associate organisations will also publish posters and hold discussions at district, city, Upazila, and all other unit levels.
Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units will distribute rice, lentils, and clothing among the destitute at thana levels, with dry food also handed out at all units nationwide.
