The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s Dhaka University chapter has staged a demonstration on the university campus over the murders of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh and Ayesha Akter in Lakshmipur.
A readymade garment worker, Dipu was beaten to death before his body was set on fire in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka, while Ayesha, a 7-year-old child, was burnt to death in a "targeted arson attack" on her home, the demonstrators said.
Ayesha was the daughter of the daughter of Belal Hossain, a fertiliser and pesticide trader at the Sutar Guptа market and joint organising secretary of the Bhabaniganj Union chapter of the BNP.
The demonstrators took out a procession from the TSC on Sunday afternoon, demanding punishment for the perpetrators of “mob attacks” taking place across Bangladesh.
After parading down some streets on the campus, the procession ended at altar of the Raju Memorial Sculpture, where a rally was held.
DU Chhatra Dal President Ganesh Chandra Roy said the student-led mass uprising that toppled the Awami League regime on Aug 5 last year had been grounded on the promise of an inclusive Bangladesh for people of all faiths, but that vision had yet to materialise.
“A force is constantly trying to destabilise the country through the dissemination of rumours, incitement and creation of mobs,” he said.
The demonstrators also demanded the immediate arrest of those involved in the killing of Inqilab Moncho leader Sharif Osman bin Hadi, who died six days after being shot on Dec 18.
They said that a quarter was abusing religion and social media to establish "mob rule" and foment disorder across Bangladesh, linking it to the murders of Dipu, who was beaten by a mob over allegations of blasphemy, and Ayesha.
