Two months after resigning from the interim government, former student advisor Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has protested a bdnews24.com report that he continued to reside in a house meant for ministers.
The report, titled “Asif, Mahfuj occupy homes meant for ministers, two months on”, was published on Jan 28.
In a rejoinder dated Jan 29, Asif described the claims as “completely false, fabricated and deliberate”.
“I resigned on the 10th of December, 2025 and on the 31st of the same month, I duly handed over the government residence Niloy-6 on Hare Road.
“I currently live in my own residence and operate party activities from there,” Asif, electioneering head of the NCP, was quoted in the statement.
Refuting claims that information came from the house’s responsible employees, Asif said: “All responsible employees know that I have not been residing in my house for more than a month.
“Niloy-6, with all furniture and necessary documents, was formally handed over to Sub-Assistant Engineer Khandakar Mominur Rahman.”
Addressing statements attributed to the director of Government Housing Md Asaduzzaman, Asif said: “This statement is completely false. Another claim referenced the housing rules allowing officials to remain in government accommodation for two months after leaving office.
“I handed over the residence on the 21st day, well before the time limit. Verification of submitted documents in the ministry will easily prove this.”
The rejoinder included a copy of the handover application, dated Dec 31, with signatures from both Asif and Mominur.
Asif requested the withdrawal of the “false report”, which he said was “published to deliberately demean and harass” him.
REPORTER’S ACCOUNT
When contacted over the reports that he had not vacated the residence, Asif had insisted he moved out nearly a month ago.
However, a visit to Niloy-6 on last Wednesday evening found a responsible employee indicating that he still uses the house.
Another staff member said, “Sir [Asif] is there; he hasn’t left the house.”
Security personnel near Niloy-6 also said, “He conducts his activities here, brings people in, and stays here.”
Yet, Asif told bdnews24.com on Wednesday night that he no longer resides in the government property and has been living in his private residence since vacating Niloy-6.
Asaduzzaman confirmed that government housing rules permit up to two months’ stay post-retirement, or up to six months if children are studying, and clarified that no specific time is mentioned for ministers or advisors.
Supporting documents indicate the house was formally handed over, and officials at the Ramna Public Works sub-division confirmed receipt of the application last week.
A senior security official noted, “They no longer live there. Some items remain to be collected, but the handover is formally complete. Security personnel remain on site.”
