The Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) cleaners are set to work during the day as well as night to keep the city free of waste as part of initiatives to boost the capital’s waste management system and make it more habitable.

The DNCC announced the decision in a media statement on Friday, highlighting proposed measures to implement multiple initiatives, including the procurement of modern vehicles for waste removal and generation of electricity from waste.

Currently, the cleaners work in one shift at any time of the day.

An open tender process is under way to further strengthen cleanliness activities in 26 DNCC wards of the city, the statement read.

It also said initiatives have been taken to bring the conventional van service used to remove waste from homes under the management of the city corporation.

“A quick response team and several mobile teams will work to quickly remove waste littered on the main roads.

“Concerned officials have been instructed to monitor regularly so wastes do not pile up anywhere.”

According to the DNCC, the procurement of vehicles including modern compactor and hook-lift trucks will greatly facilitate the waste collection and transportation system.

“As part of the waste segregation programme, 250 green and 250 yellow plastic bins and 50,000 polybags have been distributed on an experimental basis," it said.

Moreover, the city corporation plans to generate a maximum of 42.5MW of electricity from nearly 3,000 tonnes of solid waste every day under the Aminbazar Landfill Expansion and Modernisation Project.
