BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has welcomed the interim government’s announcement of parliamentary elections in February, along with the publication of the July Proclamation.
On Wednesday, he said the July Proclamation “reflects the people's aspirations” and appreciated the initiatives “aimed at realising people’s rights”.
He called it a historic juncture in the struggle to restore democratic political rights, saying: “It took over 15 years for the people to reach this point. During this long period of ‘fascism’, we have lost thousands of comrades and witnessed the bloodshed of our own sons and relatives.”
Tarique spoke virtually at a BNP rally, which began at 3:30pm outside the party’s central office in Naya Paltan, followed by a victory procession at 4:30pm to mark the anniversary of the July Uprising.

Leaders and supporters from surrounding districts joined the procession, which filled the streets from Fakirapool to Kakrail intersection.
The procession moved from Paltan to the National Press Club, Kadam Fountain, Matsya Bhaban, and The Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh, before concluding at Shahbagh.
Similar marches were held in all divisional cities across the country.
Tarique called on all pro-democracy parties to stay united for the sake of national interest, despite differences.
“We may disagree on issues, but those disagreements must be resolved through dialogue. Let us not reach a point where we no longer speak to each other.”
He added, “We’ve already shared our 31-point framework outlining what kind of state, government, and politics the BNP will pursue if entrusted with power.”
Tarique also welcomed the interim government’s reform proposals and urged public support for their implementation.
