Senior BNP leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has underscored China’s “crucial” role in resolving the longstanding Teesta water-sharing issue and the Rohingya humanitarian crisis during high-level talks in Beijing.
Leading a party delegation, the secretary general met Chinese Vice-President Han Zheng on Tuesday at the Great Hall of the People, according to BNP media cell sources.
The delegation also held a separate meeting with Liu Haixing, head of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (IDCPC).
Both sides, according to the BNP statement, expressed a shared commitment to elevating bilateral relations further based on mutual respect and equality.
They also voiced optimism that sustained high-level engagement would deepen Bangladesh–China ties and open new avenues of multi-sector cooperation.
During the meetings, discussions highlighted the “Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership” between the two countries, with emphasis on expanding institutional dialogue, mutual trust and diversified collaboration.
Both sides agreed to work towards signing a memorandum of understanding to strengthen regular exchanges and structured engagement.
Fakhrul said Bangladesh’s current foreign policy prioritises national interest, sovereignty, security and public welfare under the principle of “Bangladesh First”, while also reaffirming Dhaka’s strong support for the “One China” policy.
He stressed China’s continued support in addressing the Rohingya crisis, describing it as a critical humanitarian challenge.
He said Beijing’s constructive role was essential to ensure the refugees’ safe, dignified, sustainable and voluntary repatriation.
The BNP leader also highlighted the importance of Chinese partnership in the proposed Integrated Management Project of the Teesta River, which he said is vital for livelihoods in northern Bangladesh.
He also sought enhanced cooperation on the proposed Bangladesh–China Friendship Hospital, including support for robotic surgery, modern medical technologies, immunisation initiatives and broader public health system development.
