Sheikh Hasina has expressed deep sorrow at the death of veteran politician, freedom fighter and Bangladesh Awami League Presidium Member Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, describing his passing as “the end of an era of politics”.
In a condolence message issued on microblogging site X on Wednesday, the exiled Awami League president said the nation had lost a dedicated leader whose contributions would remain “forever etched in history”.
“With the passing of veteran politician and heroic freedom fighter Engineer Mosharraf Hossain, an era of politics comes to an end,” she said.
Hasina, the former prime minister, recalled Mosharraf as a close associate of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and said he had remained committed to the ideals of the Liberation War throughout his political life.
She highlighted his role as a sub-sector commander under Sector-1 during the 1971 Liberation War and his contribution to strengthening the Awami League’s political foundation in Chattogram.
Mosharraf, a seven-time MP from Chattogram-1, also served as minister for housing and public works and later as minister for civil aviation and tourism.
He was among the framers of Bangladesh’s 1972 Constitution.
Hasina has been in exile in India since her ouster on Aug 5, 2024 following days of student-led protests.
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Nov 17 convicted and sentenced her to death for crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
In her statement, Hasina alleged that Mosharraf had been jailed under “false charges” after the fall of the Awami League government and was denied proper treatment despite age-related illnesses.
“The man who risked his life during the Great Liberation War and dedicated the last 54 years to politics and public service was denied proper humanitarian support during one of the most vulnerable moments of his life,” she said.
Mosharraf died at Dhaka’s Square Hospital on Wednesday morning while undergoing treatment.
He was 83.
Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of his soul and conveyed condolences to his bereaved family.
