Assailants have reportedly set fire to the village home of senior Jatiya Party leader Anisul Islam Mahmud in Chattogram's Hathazari.
The incident took place shortly before midnight on Friday in the Gumanmardan area of Hathazari Upazila.
Police said a group of people arrived at the house on motorcycles, in a microbus and on foot before carrying out vandalism and setting the property on fire.
No one was at home at the time, and there were no reports of injuries.
Md Tarek Aziz, additional superintendent of police (ASP) for Hathazari Circle, said officers went to the scene after receiving reports of the attack.
“Local residents came out after hearing about the incident, and the attackers fled,” he said.
Fire Service officials later brought the fire under control. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and police say an investigation is under way.
Anisul, a former minister, is the chairman of a faction of the Jatiya Party that broke away earlier this year following internal divisions.
In August, he and several senior leaders, including Ruhul Amin Howlader, announced a split from the party, citing disagreements with party chairman G M Quader. The move came after a court imposed a temporary injunction against Mr Quader, allowing rival leaders to organise separately.
More recently, on Dec 8, Anisul's faction joined with Anwar Hossain Manju’s Jatiya Party–JP and other groups to form a new 20-party alliance called the National Democratic Front (NDF). Anisul was named president of the alliance.
