Where do freedom fighters stand if Ghulam Azam is hailed as nation’s best son, Mirza Abbas asks

No comparison can be made between 1971 and 2024, he says

Senior BNP leader Mirza Abbas has questioned the labelling of some Jamaat-e-Islami leaders, convicted of war crimes, as the nation’s best sons.

He wondered where the freedom fighters stand if the likes of Ghulam Azam are hailed in that way.

After paying tribute to the martyrs of Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War at the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar on Victory Day, he raised these points.

“The brave freedom fighters are being disrespected,” he said.

This party has not wanted peace in this country since 1947, he said.

“They did not want the freedom of the country.

“They did not want the country’s independence, and even now they do not want it. What they want is for the country to fall into crisis, to go into a bad state, and to remain a troubled place,” he said.

Replying to another question, he said 1971 and 2024 are significant in their own ways.

“There is no comparison between the two, nor is there any possibility of one,” he said.
