In a dramatic escalation of the Jatiya Party’s internal rifts, Chairman GM Quader has unceremoniously removed three top leaders from all party positions, stripping them even of their primary memberships.
The ousted heavyweights include Senior Co-Chairman Anisul Islam Mahmud, and Co-Chairmen ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader and Mujibul Haque Chunnu, marking a decisive purge as tensions within the party leadership boil over.
The announcement came on Monday through a media statement signed by the party’s Office Secretary Mahmud Alam.
According to the statement, disciplinary action was proposed against the trio during a meeting on June 25, accusing them of violating party discipline. A final decision was reached at the presidium meeting on June 28, where Quader, invoking his authority under the party constitution, formally dismissed them with immediate effect.
However, all three ousted leaders have fiercely rejected the move, branding it “unconstitutional and illegitimate”.
Speaking to bdnews24.com on Monday, Anisul Islam Mahmud said: “Once a council has been declared, such decisions must come from the council itself.
“Dismissing someone without a show-cause notice,” he said, “goes against the principle of natural justice. Even for a presidium decision, a notice must be issued first.”
He added that they still recognise Chunnu as the legitimate secretary general.
Ruhul Amin Howlader echoed the sentiment.
“As party chairman, Quader has abused his power by disregarding the constitution. His autocratic mentality is on full display.”
Chunnu himself described the expulsions as “entirely undemocratic”, saying: “Once a national council is declared, the chairman has no authority to remove someone from office.”
Earlier, Quader replaced Chunnu with Shameem Haider Patwary as the new general secretary in a separate announcement, cementing his grip on the party’s key leadership role.
Quader had appointed Chunnu as general secretary on Oct 9, 2021, replacing Mashiur Rahman Ranga.
The unfolding power struggle has plunged the Jatiya Party deeper into crisis, with both sides trading accusations of violating party norms and democratic principles.
