Amina Ahmad, a veteran of the 1952 Language Movement and a prominent organiser of the Liberation War, has died at the age of 91.
She passed on around 11am on Saturday at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, her daughter Ivy Ahmad said.
Amina was the wife of the late Prof Mozzaffar Ahmad, the president of the National Awami Party (Pro-Moscow faction) and a member of the advisory council of the Liberation War-time government in exile.
Family members said she will be buried later in the evening at Elahabad village in Cumilla’s Debidwar, beside the grave of her husband.
She served as a member of the NAP presidium and was a former member of parliament, having held a reserved seat in 2009 and 2014.
Her political journey began as a student leader at Eden Mohila College, where she served as the vice-president of the student union and played an active role on the streets during the Language Movement.
During the 1971 Liberation War, she was instrumental in organising resistance and support for the freedom struggle.
Political organisations across the spectrum, including NAP, the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad), and the Bangladesh Chhatra Union, expressed deep condolences following the news of her death.
