The Election Commission (EC) has gazetted all 297 declared winners of the general election, paving the way for their swearing-in as members of parliament.

On Friday night, after approving the results, the commission led by AMM Nasir Uddin authorised the notification, with EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed issuing the gazette.

The gazette lists the names of the elected representatives along with their parents’ details and permanent addresses.

The next move is the swearing-in ceremony, which will formally seat them in parliament.

Of the country’s 300 parliamentary constituencies, voting took place in 299 on Thursday.

Ballots in Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4 were counted, but court directives have held back the formal declaration of results.

In Sherpur-3, polling will be rescheduled after the death of a candidate triggered a fresh timetable.

At the Parliament complex in Dhaka, cleaning, maintenance and infrastructure upgrades are in their final phase ahead of the oath event.

Work includes restoring sections of the building that sustained damage during the student-led mass uprising in July 2024.

Parliament Secretariat officials said work is under way to ensure the swearing-in ceremony runs smoothly, covering protocol, security, and essential services, with the speaker’s and president’s offices, government and opposition meeting rooms, session halls, and the swearing-in chamber all made ready for use.

RESULTS IN 297 SEATS:

BNP: 209

Jamaat-e-Islami: 68

National Citizen Party (NCP): 6

Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis: 2

Islami Andolan Bangladesh: 1

Gono Odhikar Parishad: 1

Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP): 1

Ganosamhati Andolan: 1

Khelafat Majlis: 1

Independents: 7

Law Advisor Asif Nazrul recently noted that a "presidential nominee" will administer the oath in the absence of a speaker or deputy speaker.

He added that the chief election commissioner (CEC) can perform the duty if the ceremony does not occur within three days of the election.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Mashud said on Friday that Article 148(3) allows the CEC to step in from the fourth day if the speaker is unavailable.

He added that the EC would move swiftly, keeping Ramadan in mind.

“The commission’s responsibility is to publish the gazette. After that, the government will take the necessary steps. If the oath is administered quickly, the government can be formed before Ramadan,” he said.

EC Secretary Akhtar said voter turnout in the 297 declared constituencies stood at 59.44 percent. Overall turnout across 299 constituencies, including referendum ballots, reached 60.26 percent.

Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaniz Moula said preparations are routine and complete. Fixing the oath date is not within the Secretariat’s remit, but once notified, it can stage the ceremony at once.

Under Article 148(2A) of the Constitution, elected members must take their oath within three days of the publication of the election gazette.
