The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has alleged that a certain political party is systematically spreading propaganda and preparing to cast fake votes to manipulate the parliamentary polls.
Mahdi Amin, spokesperson for the party’s central election steering committee, raised these concerns during a press briefing at the BNP’s Gulshan office on Tuesday.
He said the country has witnessed continuous media reports, surveys by reliable institutions, and the large turnout at BNP rallies led by party Chairman Tarique Rahman since Jan 22.
Mahdi added that these factors confirm that BNP enjoys strong public support, and in a free and fair election, the party’s victory would be “inevitable”.
"Recognising this reality, a particular party has been continuously spreading propaganda, promoting violent politics, exploiting religion for political gain, and even preparing for fake votes,” he said. “Faced with the power of the people, such tactics are proof of their political bankruptcy."
He criticised attempts to buy votes, calling it “shameful”, and cited an incident in the Dhaka-15 constituency where a senior lawyer linked to the rival party allegedly handed out money to influence voters.
The spokesperson said video of the incident has gone viral nationwide and sparked widespread criticism.
He also accused the party of bribing people, including children, in violation of electoral conduct rules, and warned that if such practices occur in the party chairman’s own constituency, it raises concerns about nationwide misconduct.
Mahdi urged the Election Commission and returning officers to take legal measures swiftly.
He said similar incidents have been reported in Khulna-1, where candidates from the same party allegedly distributed cash among voters.
Regarding election violence, the BNP leader alleged that the rival party has deployed "criminals" in Cumilla-14 and Bogura-4.
He claimed that in Chauddagram, under the Cumilla-11 constituency, activists of that party “attacked” BNP supporters under the cover of night.
Similar incidents were reported in Bogura’s Nondigram on Monday night, where houses were reportedly vandalised and looted, leaving several local BNP leaders injured, he said.
“No matter how much propaganda, conspiracy, or violence is used to thwart our victory, the pro-democracy people will resist and establish their rights,” he said.
Asked about voter turnout, he said the party remains hopeful that people want to exercise their voting rights freely after nearly 18 years.
He said there is a festive mood among voters and expressed hope for a “peaceful” atmosphere, urging all parties to play their role in maintaining calm so that people can vote without fear.
