The government has proposed to fully withdraw duties on musical instruments such as guitars, pianos, and violins, to support the development of music and encourage creative musical content.

The move could reduce the prices of these instruments and their essential parts.

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury presented the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in parliament on Thursday.

In his budget speech, Khosru said the government aims to build a globally competitive “creative economy” by harnessing the talent and creativity of the country's promising young generation.

To support that goal by making high-quality content production and filmmaking equipment more accessible to young people, the budget proposes reducing duties and taxes on several products.

The finance minister said, “To improve the quality of music used in digital media and support the production of creative music, I propose the complete withdrawal of the existing 5 percent regulatory duty on the import of necessary musical instruments, such as guitars, pianos, violins, and their required parts.”
