Dust-laden days in Dhaka

Residents of the capital grapple with severe air pollution throughout the year, a burden that intensifies severalfold during the dry season. On Tuesday, Dhaka once again topped the list of the world’s most polluted cities. According to the latest data from global air-quality monitor IQAir, the city’s score reached 250 at 9am -- a level classified as “very unhealthy”. As dust pollution spirals, respiratory and other illnesses are on the rise. Health experts advise wearing masks when venturing outdoors.

The suffering caused by air pollution only worsens for Dhaka residents as winter arrives. This photograph, showing streets covered in dust, was taken at the Shaheed Nagar embankment road in Lalbagh. Photo: Abdullah al Momin
