A government dengue taskforce has swooped down on Gulshan, fining several buildings where Aedes mosquito larvae were found, with State Minister for Local Government Mir Shahe Alam leading the drive.
The operation began after 9am Wednesday around the Gulshan Youth Club, also known as Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Memorial Park.
The Dhaka North City Corporation said it was part of the taskforce's regular programme to destroy Aedes breeding grounds and control dengue during the monsoon season.
The taskforce was formed under Alam's supervision, with the decision taken on Tuesday.
"A national taskforce has been formed under my leadership to conduct drives across Dhaka city," he said. "[Wednesday’s] operation is its first activity, aimed at boosting public engagement and awareness."
The state minister said a national committee under the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives had met under the chairmanship of Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, with secretaries from around 20 ministries in attendance.
The meeting discussed how to raise public awareness, destroy Aedes breeding grounds and curb larval spread nationwide, and issued directives to city corporations, municipalities and all relevant bodies.
On the first day of the drive, Chois Restaurant on Road 7 in Gulshan was fined Tk 50,000 after Aedes larvae were found on the premises, with two months' imprisonment in lieu of payment.
Three of the six homes inspected were also fined after larvae were found.
Nova Leuron tablets, a long-lasting larvicide, are being distributed and applied to destroy mosquito breeding sites.
Residents are being urged to clear stagnant water from flower pots, car tyres and discarded buckets.
Dengue deaths remain low this year compared with last year's surge.
No deaths were recorded in March or April, two deaths each were reported in January and February, and one in May.
The worst month was November 2025, when 104 people died.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has been tracking hospitalisation and mortality data for dengue since 2000.
Among these years, the highest number of hospital admissions was recorded in 2023, with 321,179 patients entering hospitals.
That year also saw the highest number of fatalities from the disease, with 1,705 people dying of dengue.
Chikungunya has also emerged as a growing concern alongside dengue.
