The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has removed M Najmul Islam from his position as chairman of the Finance Committee.

The BCB says the decision to remove him from the post was made in the larger interest of Bangladesh’s top cricketing body after Najmul’s remarks on cricketers sparked widespread backlash.

The decision was announced at a press conference on Thursday.

A statement by the board said, “The BCB announces that after reviewing recent events and in the larger interest of the organisation, President Aminul Islam has relieved Najmul Islam from the post of chairman of the Finance Committee.

“The decision has been taken in accordance with the powers vested in the BCB president as per Article 31 of the BCB constitution and in the interest of smooth and effective management of the board’s activities.”

Aminul will serve as the head of the finance committee until further notice.

Reiterating its support for the cricketers, the board said it expects professionalism from them.

“The BCB reiterates that the interests of the cricketers are the highest priority. The board is fully committed to upholding the honour and dignity of the cricketers under the board.

“The BCB hopes that the cricketers will demonstrate the utmost professionalism and dedication for the good of Bangladesh cricket during these challenging times and will do their utmost to ensure their continued participation in the BPL.”

A few hours before the BCB’s statement, Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) President Mohammad Mithun said at a briefing on behalf of the cricketers that removing Najmul from any committee or responsibility was not enough, and demanded his resignation.
