From the first ball, Bangladesh blazed past West Indies, with Saif Hassan and Soumya Sarkar lighting up Mirpur with a dazzling 176-run partnership, propelling their team to a commanding 179-run victory and a long-awaited ODI series win.
The Tigers turned a pitch that promised spin and struggle into a stage for dominance at the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium on Thursday, sealing their first series win since March 2024.
After Mehidy Hasan Miraz opted to bat, the opening pair raced off the starting line and powered Bangladesh to 296 for 8. The West Indies innings lasted just 30.1 overs, ending at a meagre 117 all out.
Rishad Hossain starred with the ball, claiming 3 wickets to finish the series with 12 scalps -- becoming the first Bangladesh bowler since 2015 to take more than 10 wickets in a bilateral ODI series. Nasum Ahmed also bagged three, while Tanvir Islam returned 8-0-16-2.
Soumya (91 off 86) and Saif (80 off 72) attacked from the outset on a pitch that had previously favoured spin.
Saif punished Akeal Hosein with two fours in the first over and followed with a towering six, while Soumya responded with two reverse-hit sixes off Roston Chase.
The duo brought up Bangladesh’s second-highest ODI opening stand and the first century opening partnership at the venue in a decade.
Saif’s brilliance continued with his maiden ODI fifty, marked by towering boundaries off Justin Greaves and Gudakesh Motie. Soumya, meanwhile, raced into the nineties with a six and a boundary in the 25th over but fell nine short of his century, visibly distraught.
Najmul Hossain Shanto and Towhid Hridoy added 50 for the third wicket, with Shanto spectacularly caught by Alick Athanaze.
During the chase, the West Indies’ resistance crumbled early.
Nasum struck first, removing Athanaze and Auguste cheaply. Brandon King offered brief resistance, scoring 18 before falling to Nasum.
Sherfane Rutherford was caught by Mehidy Hasan Miraz for 12. Shai Hope managed just 4 off Tanvir Islam. Rishad then virtually finished off the innings, dismissing Chase and Gudakesh Motie.
Despite a brief spell of resistance, the lower order collapsed under relentless Bangladesh bowling.
The emphatic win, following a Super-Over defeat in the second ODI, gave Bangladesh a 2-1 series triumph and a morale-boosting statement on home soil.
