Students demonstrating for reforms to government job quotas have driven out leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League from Dhaka University’s Ruqayyah Hall after the deaths of six people during violent protests in the capital and other parts of the country.
The students living in Ruqayyah Hall also demand a ban on activities by any political organisation in the dormitory.
The nine BCL leaders include Atika Binta Hossain, the president of BCL’s Ruqayyah Hall unit.
The students booed them while driving them out after Tuesday midnight.
Several students said they chased Atika and the eight others after the BCL leaders tried to harass anti-quota protesters at night.
The university’s proctorial team rescued the BCL leaders later.
The students gathered outside the provost’s office and shouted slogans demanding that student politics be banned in the hall.
They later made the provost sign a paper declaring a ban on political activities.
“We, the girls of Ruqayyah Hall, are getting this statement declared that from now on (17.07.2024) any sort of student politics (Chhatra League Chhatra Dal, Jubo Dal, Jamaat-Shibir etc) has been banned inside the hall,” the paper read.
“There will be no political or Gana Room (a room where all freshers are forced to live), no political programme, no political involvement. If we are harmed by these organisations, the administration and the provost will have to bear the responsibilities. Ruqayyah Hall has been declared free from student politics from today.”
When bdnews24.com contacted her for comments, Provost Nelofar Parvin said she was not in a state to speak now.
Atika or other BCL leaders were not available for comments.
