Students from Dhaka College and Dhaka City College have clashed once again, this time over a “bump” while ascending the stairs at a coaching centre in the capital’s Science Laboratory.
The incident took place around 1pm on Sunday, as confirmed by New Market Police Station chief Mohsin Uddin.
OC Mohsin said, “The clash broke out after a bump occurred on the stairs of a coaching centre in the area, leading to a confrontation between students from both colleges.
“There were several instances of chasing and counter-chasing during the altercation.”
Police quickly intervened, sending the students back inside their colleges, and the situation was brought under control in a short time, according to the officer.
However, police could not confirm any injuries resulting from the incident.
Dhaka College and City College are less than half a kilometre apart at the Science Laboratory intersection.
Students from both institutions frequently clash several times a year over petty issues.
In late October 2024, City College students demanded the removal of the acting principal and vice-principal.
Amid the turmoil, the college was closed for 20 days before academic activities resumed on Nov 19, 2024.
The very next day, City College students allegedly vandalised two buses of Dhaka College on the latter’s 184th founding anniversary.
This incident triggered a series of clashes between students of the two colleges, lasting until the evening.
According to Dhaka College, over 150 students were injured in the violence.
Later, a committee was formed, consisting of representatives from Dhaka College, City College, Ideal College, Birshreshtha Noor Mohammad Public College, Birshreshtha Munshi Abdur Rouf Public College, and police.
The committee was tasked with ensuring that trivial issues among these colleges in the Dhanmondi area do not degenerate into larger conflicts.
However, despite these efforts, a petty incident once again led to clashes between students of these two colleges.
