The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal’s candidate for vice-president (VP) Abidul Islam Khan has accused a “group” of running an online smear campaign ahead of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) election, saying rivals were “unable to confront us politically”.
Speaking to reporters on campus on Friday, Abidul claimed the panel’s international affairs secretary’s Facebook account had been hacked and there was an attempt to hack the Liberation War and Democratic Movement secretary’s account.
As polling nears, he said, “A group is spreading disinformation online after failing to counter us in debate”.
He urged students not to fall for rumours. “Whatever happens, examine the facts thoroughly before acting. If we commit any offence, we are ready to face the dock—just don’t pin falsehoods on us.”
Abidul warned persistent online propaganda could poison the electoral environment.
He appealed to the DUCSU election commission to act against pages spreading “false and malicious” content.
He added that his panel had received an “exceptional response” from students across residential halls and institutes, while minor issues had been raised with the chief returning officer.
