Students from seven government colleges have announced a blockade at three key locations in Dhaka on Wednesday, pressing a single-point demand for the immediate issuance of a final ordinance to establish the proposed Dhaka Central University.
The blockade is scheduled to begin at 11am at the Science Laboratory, Technical, and Tantibazar intersections, according to the protesters.
In a media statement issued on Tuesday, Nayem Howlader, a representative for the movement to transform the seven government colleges into a university, outlined the group's demands.
The statement called for the upcoming Advisory Council meeting on Jan 15 to approve the updated draft of the Dhaka Central University ordinance and for the president to subsequently issue the final executive order.
A section of the students previously held sit-in protests outside the Shikkha Bhaban on Dec 7 and 8 to push for the same cause.
The statement read, "During our sit-in, education ministry officials met with us and assured students that all necessary formalities would be completed by December, with the ordinance being issued in early January."
Highlighting the scheduled Advisory Council meeting, it added: "We demand that the Dhaka Central University Act 2025 be approved in this upcoming meeting, alongside the issuance of the final ordinance."
The education ministry released the draft ordinance on Sept 24. It proposes dividing the seven colleges into four schools under an interdisciplinary or “schooling” framework. The colleges would continue offering higher secondary education under the proposal.
Plans are under way to form Dhaka Central University by combining Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Girl’s College, Mirpur Government Bangla College and Government Titumir College. However, teachers and sections of the colleges’ student bodies remain divided over how the new institution should be structured.
