The Jatiyabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) and Islami Chhatra Shibir have alleged that several Facebook accounts belonging to candidates from their Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) panels were disabled through “cyberattacks”.
At a press conference on Monday, leaders of the pro-BNP JCD alleged that the Facebook accounts of vice president (VP) candidate Abidul Islam Khan and general secretary (GS) candidate Sheikh Tanvir Bari Hamim had been disabled.
However, Hamim’s Facebook account appeared active during the press conference, which began around 1:30pm. The last post from his account had been published at 12:30pm.
Speaking at the event, Hamim said: “Since this morning, the ID of Chhatra Dal-backed VP candidate Abidul Islam Khan was disabled through a cyberattack at 9:30am. He has tried to restore it repeatedly. Despite his ID being verified, he has not been able to restore it yet. Similarly, my ID was disabled around 11:30am through a cyberattack. I have tried repeatedly but restoration is not possible. Once it is restored, it is locked again.”
Hamim further claimed that the account of assistant GS candidate Tanvir Al Hadi Mayed, also from the Chhatra Dal panel, was being “disabled” in the same manner.
“A group, who are afraid of losing the election tomorrow, are carrying out various cyberattacks out of fear of popular leaders and students who are on their side,” Hamim said.
“They can carry out cyberattacks, that’s good. I will appeal to the students of Dhaka University through you, to give ballot attacks tomorrow against those who are giving cyberattacks.”
Abidul Islam Khan, the Chhatra Dal candidate for VP, described his experience of having his account disabled.
“After I woke up around 9:30am and was preparing to leave the house, I saw that my ID was gone. It was disabled,” he said.
He added that after restoring his account briefly, he posted a warning on Facebook about the incident.
“Exactly 56-57 minutes after this post, my ID was disabled again in the same way. I have appealed and submitted the evidence. I don’t know if I will get my ID back before the election,” he said.
