Dhaka, Sep 30 (bdnews24.com) – The government has decided to introduce four-year Fazil (bachelor degree) course in madrasas under Islami University from 2010-11 academic year.
The inauguration of the course was held at National Academy for Educational Management (NAEM) on Thursday. The course will be launched in 31 Fazil and Kamil madrasas in all seven divisions.
Seven madrasas under Dhaka Education Board, three under Sylhet, 10 under Chittagong, one in Barisal, two in Khulna, six in Rajshahi and two madrasas under Rangpur Board have been given permission to open the course on the basis of fulfilling the required conditions.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid distributed approval letters to madrasa principals on Thursday.
Admission procedure has already been started.
The 208th Syndicate meeting of the Islamic University on Sep 5 with vice-chancellor professor M Alauddin approved an ordinance with necessary changes regarding the course.
Initially, it decided to open the course with five subjects – Al Quran and Islamic studies, Al Hadis and Islamic studies, Dawah and Islamic studies, Islamic History and Culture, and Arabic Language and Culture. A total of 50 students will be admitted in every subject.
The courses will be conducted according to the IU curriculum.
Education minister Nurul Islam Nahid said generally the madrasa education is thought to propagating militancy. "But it's not correct. Different governments have abused the education system at different times. It was not given due importance."
The present government has taken all necessary steps for the development of this sector, he added.
There are currently 1,311 madrasas – 1,114 Fazil (honours) and 197 Kamil (post graduate) – under the university. A total of 187,956 students are studying there – 129,426 in Fazil and 58,530 in Kamil.
