Eden Mohila College, one of the oldest educational institutions in Dhaka, is looking to resume higher secondary education after nearly three decades after it was suspended.
Principal Prof Hosne Ara Parveen said the college had applied to the education ministry on Mar 3 to restart classes for grades 11 and 12.
The move comes despite the college currently managing over 24,000 students across 23 departments at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Responding to queries over managing additional students alongside its existing academic load, she said the college previously offered higher secondary education with strong results.
“If the higher secondary level is reintroduced, many girls in the capital will get the opportunity to study here,” she said.
She added that the college has adequate infrastructure and teachers to accommodate the students.
“A new building has been constructed where classes can be held, so there will be no space constraints,” she said.
According to the college, its students last appeared in higher secondary examinations in 1996.
An associate professor of the English department, Fahmida Haque, a former higher secondary student of the college, confirmed the information.
Among Dhaka’s seven affiliated colleges, only Eden Mohila College and Government Titumir College currently do not offer higher secondary education.
On Monday evening, the principal said the programme had not been permanently closed but rather suspended.
She said the ministry had recently sought details on when and why the programme was halted, and whether restarting it would require additional government funding.
The principal said relaunching the programme would not require any extra allocation.
According to the college’s website, the 150-year-old institution has 252 teachers, six academic and administrative buildings, and six residential halls.
